Institution profile: KCAB (South Korea)
Summary of findings
- There are limited fluctuations in the number of arbitrations filed each year. The total amount in dispute, however, shows two unusually high peaks in 2012 and 2016.
- South Korea is less known as a seat of international arbitration so it is unsurprising that the number of domestic arbitrations in South Korea vastly outweighs the number of international arbitrations (by a ratio of about 3 cases to 1).
- China dominates as the main country of origin of parties (25.1%), followed closely by the USA with 20.2%. 33.7% of the parties originate from the Asia Pacific region (excl. China).
- Construction disputes dominate (41%) with no clear other class. Construction projects tend to be high value, which could explain the peaks in 2012 and 2016.
